In this Prom, Daniel Barenboim and his Staatskapelle celebrate two of Great Britain’s most important composers – one of late romanticism, Edward Elgar, one contemporary, Sir Harrison Birtwistle.

With a long lasting record of triumphant concert performances of Elgar’s works in the past, the Staatskapelle Berlin and their Music Director for Life, bring the generous scope of their interpretation of Elgar's Second Symphony to their concert, celebrating a work whose modernity and astonishing textural effects still startle nowadays.

Sir Harrison Birtwistle's Deep Time, a co-commission for the BBC and the Staatskapelle Berlin celebrates its UK premiere. With this work Birtwistle continues his career-long fascination with time and its manipulation in a sweeping new orchestral work that swaps the relentless tick-tock of the everyday for something more powerful and more alien.
