'Balagan' Honoured by German Record Critics’ Award
Accentus Music's release Balagan earns a spot on the German Record Critics' Award Long List, celebrating its most captivating virtuosity.
Accentus Music is proud to announce that the album Balagan, featuring Noa Wildschut (violin), Pablo Barragán (clarinet), and Frank Dupree (piano), has been recognized on the Quarterly Critics’ Choice list of the German Record Critics' Award (Deutsche Schallplattenkritik).
The jury’s statement reads:
"This CD covers a wide range of music and includes Paul Schoenfield’s clarinet trio, a central work that is well worth discovering, and which could hardly be more thrillingly interpreted. Noa Wildschut, Pablo Barragán, and Frank Dupree plumb the deepest depths with the most captivating virtuosity. The composer, who died in 2024, combines classical music, jazz, and folk music to create a fascinating musical experience. Works by Bartók and Vivier, as well as – in arrangements – by Bloch, Ahbez, and Kovács (with Anton Spronk, cello), complete this magnificent album."
At the heart of Balagan is Paul Schoenfield’s electrifying Trio for clarinet, violin, and piano, a work that seamlessly blends classical traditions with jazz and folk influences. Surrounding this central piece, the album features Béla Bartók’s Contrasts, Claude Vivier’s Pièce pour violon et clarinette, and imaginative arrangements, including Ernest Bloch’s Prayer and Eden Ahbez’s iconic Nature Boy. Each piece shines with the trio’s dynamic interplay and virtuosity.
A production of Accentus Music, in coproduction with Südwestrundfunk.
