Accentus Music at Lucerne Festival 2024
Accentus Music produces the festive opening concert and extends its Rachmaninoff cycle with Riccardo Chailly and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra.
Gustav Mahler’s Seventh Symphony, with which Riccardo Chailly and his Lucerne Festival Orchestra will open the Lucerne Summer Festival, poses an enigma. It begins with dark and pessimistic music, only to culminate in a spirit of oversize optimism and jubilation. Since it was founded over 20 years ago, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra has been a top-rank Mahler orchestra. More than a hundred performers offer a spectacle for the ears. And of course there will be plenty to see as well.
In the latest instalment of their Rachmaninoff cycle, Chailly and the orchestra blend the Russian composer’s first works with his final opus. Starting with Rachmaninoff’s youthful First Piano Concerto – a blend of Grieg’s romantic exuberance and Tchaikovsky’s depth – the programme contrasts with the mature Symphonic Dances, composed as Rachmaninoff reflected on his life shortly before his death in 1943. The 22-year-old pianist Alexander Malofeev will be the evening’s soloist, praised by Chailly for his exceptional talent, brilliant technique, and profound musical maturity.
