This year the MusikTheater an der Wien is represented at the Film Festival Rathausplatz with three productions:

“Der Prozess” (Gottfried von Einem), August 3rd, 21:00
Franz Kafka’s famous opening line also introduces Gottfried von Einem’s opera - Josef K. finds himself in a world shaped by a mysterious accusation and an incomprehensible court. Premiered in 1953, the work combines driving rhythms with elements of jazz and twelve-tone music. The performance presents the production from the MusikTheater an der Wien at the Kammeroper 2025, staged by Stefan Herheim and conducted by Walter Kobéra, in co-production with Neue Oper Wien.

“Die Fledermaus” (Johann Strauss), August 24th, 20:30
Since its premiere in 1874, Johann Strauss’ operetta has become one of the most beloved works of the repertoire. With waltz melodies and a touch of irony, it playfully blurs the lines between social roles and reality. Marking the 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth, this production, directed by artistic director Stefan Herheim, was recorded 2025 at the Theater an der Wien with Petr Popelka conducting the Wiener Symphoniker.

“Wo die wilden Kerle wohnen“ (Oliver Knussen), August 28th, 18:14
Based on Maurice Sendak’s picture book, this family opera follows Max on an imaginative journey to a distant island after being sent to his room. There, he encounters the Wild Things and becomes their king before returning home. Since 1980, Knussen’s vibrant, colourful score has captivated audiences of all ages. The 2023 production is directed by Nikolaus Habjan.
