Few names in global EDM carry the same instant recognition as Steve Aoki. Born in Miami to Japanese entrepreneur Rocky Aoki, he founded his Dim Mak Records label at nineteen, turning it into one of the most influential indie imprints in electronic music. His sets are events as much as performances, built around relentless energy, a gift for reading a crowd, and a signature ritual: throwing cake into the audience.

This 2019 performance was captured at the Nameless Music Festival, held in Barzio, in the mountains of the Valsassina valley north of Milan. By that year, the festival had grown from 6,000 attendees at its 2013 debut to 50,000, one of the largest electronic music gatherings in Italy. Aoki closed the final night of the seventh edition, headlining a mainstage that had hosted Alesso, Benny Benassi and The Bloody Beetroots across the weekend.

Over the course of an hour, he moves through his own catalogue and a stack of electro house edits and mashups, holding a crowd of thousands in the palm of his hand. The mountains of northern Italy make for an unlikely but spectacular backdrop. What the set documents, beyond the music, is why Aoki has remained a constant at the world's biggest festivals for over a decade: he understands, better than most, that a DJ set is theatre.
