Gounod’s Faust at Opera de Lille
Faust returns to its original 1859 version in Lille, under the direction of Denis Podalydès with costumes by Christian Lacroix.
Opéra de Lille presents a new production of Gounod’s Faust, one of the most emblematic works of the French operatic repertoire and a cornerstone of international stages. Inspired by Goethe’s timeless myth, the opera continues to fascinate with its blend of metaphysical drama, lyrical intensity and memorable melodies.
Director Denis Podalydès brings a fresh theatrical perspective to the work, combining narrative clarity with a nuanced sense of character, making the drama both accessible and psychologically engaging. His staging is elevated by the refined and imaginative costumes of Christian Lacroix, whose visual signature lends the production a distinctive elegance. Under the baton of Louis Langrée, the score is performed in its original 1859 version, revealing the full richness and colour of Gounod’s writing.
Tenor Julien Dran embodies Faust as a man torn between despair and desire, while Jérôme Boutillier’s Méphistophélès brings both charisma and menace to the role. Opposite them, soprano Vannina Santoni delivers a deeply expressive Marguerite, capturing the character’s emotional journey with sensitivity and intensity.
Balancing dramatic power, musical refinement and visual sophistication, this production offers a compelling and contemporary reading of a major operatic classic, reaffirming the enduring relevance of Faust for today’s audiences.
