Daniel Harding, the new music director of the prestigious Orchestre de Paris, continues his homage to Schumann through one of his most radiant works and a jewel of romanticism: “Das Paradies und die Peri” (Paradise and the Peri), an adaptation for orchestra choir and soloists of an oriental tale.
Two days before Christmas, on December 21st and 22nd (live signal available), Matthias Goerne, Christiane Karg, Andy Staples, Kate Royal, Gerhild Romberger and Allan Clayton will join Harding and the Philharmonie de Paris in a worldly Oratorio that exalts the heavenly purity of paradise in the shimmering and magical colours of Arabian Nights.
Conceived under the influence of the 19th century’s orientalist craze, “Das Paradies und die Peri” was highly successful, from the premiere onwards, and was performed dozens of times already during the lifetime Schumann, who himself considered it to be his "most important work in every sense of the word."
