New Releases In June
June should be marked in every opera lover’s calendar: three rarely performed modern operas in one DVD-Box set, Sven-Erich Bechtolf’s Figaro, which concludes the highly acclaimed Mozart/Da Ponte cycle in Salzburg, and Bernard Haitink and violinist Isabelle Faust in a DVD/Blu-ray production with the Berliner Philharmoniker that was just awarded the German Record Critics’ Award in the Quarterly Critics’ Choice!

Charles-François Gounod’s Faust was once one of the most famous and most performed of all operas and is still cherished today: surprisingly enough it has never been performed at the Salzburg Festival until now!
For the Shakespeare anniversary, the Bregenz Festival is continuing the rediscovery of hidden opera gems with Hamlet, an opera by Verdi contemporaries Franco Faccio, who conducted the first performance of Verdi’s Aida in Italy and the world premiere of Otello, and Arrigo Boito, librettist of Otello and Falstaff.
This opera season’s most anticipated premiere features Anna Netrebko and Piotr Beczala in their first ever Wagnerian roles as Elsa and Lohengrin under the baton of Christian Thielemann, doubtlessly today’s foremost conductor of this repertoire.
